I have had bands come to me to master their mixes for distribution and watched as iTunes made a shitload of money from them and have seen the band get a poultry 5-6 grand for a million seller ...

The money is in touring.

I have three novels on Amazon Prime and Barnes & Noble Online.

The royalties only earn a few thousand a year, pre-tax.

Someday, in the distant future, when I... ahem... retire... maybe I'll take the writing seriously and try to spin it into more than just a hobby. But in the meantime, it is just part of who I am.

Incidentally, I also self-identify as a musician.

I was a keyboardist in a rock band in college. We didn't net a red cent, clubbing, but the life was great.

I still have a few synthesizers. I've been offered $15,000 for a mint condition Sequential Circuits Prophet-5. I refuse to sell it. But I rarely use it.

This past winter, I bought a grand piano. Mason & Hamlin BB+ (7' conservatory size). Life goes on, and I have room for the instrument I've wanted since middle school, so now I have it and I play it every single day.

So, it's not about the money.
